Paternity
Paternity is the state of
being a father.
Establishing paternity
Establishing paternity is the legal process of officially
determining
who the father of a child is and creating the existence of a father/child
relationship.
The reasons to establish paternity:
If a child is born to an
unmarried couple, there is no presumption that a certain individual is the father with the
exception(s) listed below. As such, the father has no rights to the child and the child has no
legal ties to the father.
Paternity ensures a child’s
right to child support, health insurance, eligibility for benefits and rights of inheritance. In
addition, it guarantees an unmarried father his parental rights to visitation (i.e. it affords
him the right to seek custody, visitation, etc.) and requires he be contacted prior to the child
being put up for adoption.
